Naturally dogs are to express their glands through their urine and feces, however some dogs have a problem doing this naturally and require manual expression. Problems with the anal glands generally involve an inability of a dog to properly express them on her own. Constant licking/attention to the hind end is signs of anal problems where expression is needed to relieve the sacs.
